Braille Board

Empowering Touch Unlocking Potential

Our Mission

Only 10% of the blind and visually impaired community are able to read braille. Why?

Braille education is a costly resource that not all can afford. That is where the Braille Board comes in.

The Braille Board is designed to be an innovative and affordable braille teaching device that uses technology to create a moving braille display. Using the Braille Board, blind and visually impaired people can learn Braille, and unlock a new way to interact with the world around them.

ABOUT US

Sam (far left) and Will (second to left)

We are Will and Sam, sophomores at the Illinois Math and Science Academy. We are passionate about equity and making learning accessible. Grouping up, we identified how inaccessible braille education is. Join us in our fight to end braille illiteracy through the Braille Board.

Our Solution

The Braille Board makes use of an Arduino inside to carry its functions. With a preloaded dictionary, one tactile button translates a random word into braille. This is then displayed on the Braille Board face. Users can then practice interactive braille reading. To make it even more independent, the Braille Board makes use of a speaker to output the random word so those can self-check. Currently we are building a prototype and gathering funding to make it fully functional.

Compared to other devices on the market, the Braille Board boasts the advantages of being much cheaper and more accessible while being just as effective.

Currently we are seeking funds and seed money from pitch competitions to build a working prototype In 6 months we plan to finalize this
After we plan to test it out on the blind community in Aurora where we are based Doing this we an refine and improve our model We plan to achieve this by next year
